Multi-tasking Welcome to MichiganSmallBiz.com Web site and I hope you enjoy and benefit from your visit here. I will be contributing regular articles to this site that I hope you will find helpful or at least entertaining. So here we go. Multi-tasking is something we are all trying to do in our lives. If I am painfully honest with myself I’m really not very good at multi-tasking. I have mastered drinking coffee, eating cereal and reading the paper in the morning. This works if there are no objections to the milk and coffee stains on the paper when I’m done. Or I think I am pretty good at driving and talking on my cell phone. But, then again I’m not following myself down the road as I wander from lane to lane either. I also think I am pretty good at watching the evening news and listening as my beloved tells me about her day. But, come to think of it I think she quit participating in this some time ago. The point is we aren’t very good at doing more than one thing at a time. Not only is this true for us personally but I think it also applies to our businesses. We can do an OK job of multi-tasking. But it’s unlikely we are going to reach our full potential in anything unless we give it our full attention. So how does this relate to your business? How many masters are you serving in the name of keeping the family fed or employed? In some cases this is a necessary choice or there is a natural link to different disciplines that will increase the value of your service to your customer. But in other cases it creates a burden that limits your ability to do a great job in one discipline or specialty. Here are some questions to ask yourself if you are working in multiple businesses or markets.
As a consumer I much prefer dealing with a company that is experienced and expert in their chosen discipline. I feel like I get better service, better quality and a better prices from a specialist most of the time. Even if I have to pay a bit more I enjoy dealing with a true expert in their field. In my opinion a high level of specialization creates a competitive edge that is hard to beat.
